This in reply to Tony’s comment on the nomination page:
The A330 is actually the model aircraft in this answer, which suggests that there was perhaps 150-180km of range for this plane with 2 dead engines.
But also that controlled decline is appropriate for a plane that has lost power, and wikipedia flameout suggests that lowering altitude is important to get higher air pressure, and then the plane speed is used windmills the engines up to speed for re-start. So while its obviously a concern that both engines lost power, it seems like the appropriate action was taken in a particularly uneventful fashion.
