    The depression story was really peculiar. I can’t help wondering if the writer was determined to talk up the story despite the figures, because this was the issue that John Kirwan edited …

      The other explanation is that they might really have some data showing that the people who do two lessons aren’t terribly unrepresentative of registrants.

    I think the food prices story is mostly an ambiguous sentence.

    [expert] said food prices had been creeping up by $2 a week over the last three decades

    I’m pretty sure he means an annual increase of $2 in the average weekly expenditure. More of a problem is the invocation of people on fixed incomes. I can’t think of any group whose nominal income is the same as three decades ago. And in most cases even real incomes are up a bit.
